Visit to the Department
Welcome to a snapshot of your twin visit and what it might entail, but please bear in mind that you might not have all of these tests performed - it depends which particular project you are involved in. Your twin visit will be taking place in our new premises at St Thomas’ Hospital with spectacular views across the Thames towards the Houses of Parliament, with a member of our research team.
After the consenting process we will go through your medical history and illnesses that you may have had or run in your family, as well as other risk factors. We will also check whether you are likely to be identical or non-identical if you are unaware of your Zygosity before proceeding with the range of tests. Your visit lasts between two and four hours, depending on the assessments you will be having on the day.
Currently the range of tests include the following:- Bone density scan (DEXA) of hip, spine and whole body
- MRI of spine
- Blood test
- Lung function test
- Grip strength
- Height and weight, blood pressure
- ECG
- Face photos
- Skin assessment
- Eye test
- Sensory perception test
- Musical tone test
- Personality and behaviour tests
- There are also the fat biopsy, muscle biopsy and mole biopsy for those who are suitable.
